CONCERTO 25 de ABRIL

Maria da Rocha, violino
Matthias Strassmüller, eletrónica
Convidado Especial: João Valinho na bateria.

This concert is the result of a five-day residency at O’culto da Ajuda.

We present pieces for instruments and live-electronics using improvised and composed materials as well as acousmatic compositions.

Referenzen 8.22 (ca. 15’)
Matthias Strassmüller
for 10-channel electroacoustic sounds

Installation piece creating a virtual string- and percussion-orchestra projected in space.

Counterpoint Study (2’03’’)
Matthias Strassmüller
for 8-channel electroacoustic sounds

A short acousmatic prelude of shimmering sounds made fluid.
This is a multi-channel version of a compositional study on counterpoint.

Vermello (ca. 10’)
Maria da Rocha, Matthias Strassmüller
for violin and live-electronics

An interplay between opposites of sound and noise, tonal and atonal, acoustic and electronic. The violin moves between idiomatic passages and grainy textures, the electronics play with time stretch, spectral analysis and frequency transposition. Both instruments move between tempered and just intonation.

Doppeltrio (ca. 8’)
Maria da Rocha, Matthias Strassmüller, João Valinho
for violin, drum-set & live-electronics

The structure of this piece plays with classical phrasings. The patch records the live-performance and chooses sound snippets of varying lengths to transform these into harmonic textures and complex noise-sounds.

Study on emotional modulation (ca. 2’)
Maria da Rocha, João Valinho
for violin, cymbal and styrofoam

Acoustic noise-sounds varying within the field of dynamics and timbre, with a palette of bow overpressure sounds over ghost notes and the resulting harmonic spectra.

Durch und Durch (10’37’’)
Matthias Strassmüller
for 8-channel electroacoustic sounds

Density and weight, gestural movement and extended textures, percussive interruptions and fluid plastic images. After completing his PhD with the title “Interfacing Composition: Electronics and Instruments”, in this piece Matthias invites the listener to embark on a joyful journey through acousmatic sound-worlds.

Open Source (ca. 5’)
Maria da Rocha, Matthias Strassmüller
for violin and live-electronics

The electronic patch in this piece triggers instrumental samples, choosing from a library of sounds compiled with the Cologne-based viola player Annegret Mayer-Lindenberg (Ensemble Garage). The live-violin playfully improvises within the dynamic spectrum up to the trigger-point.

Verwendungszweck Trio (ca. 12’)
Maria da Rocha, Matthias Strassmüller, João Valinho
for violin, drum-set & live-electronics

In the project titled “Verwendungszweck” Matthias develops software tools for live electronic improvisiation. In the context of our residency this project evolves into a piece of chamber music for acoustic and synthesized sounds. Melodic passages and crafted noise sounds are applied to musical phrasings with fine dynamic nuances.
